Packaging is a specification business that looks simple from the outside. Cartons, tape, and film are commodities only after the numbers are fixed. Before that, they are ways to receive the wrong product quickly. This note lists the requirements worth writing down. It is not a SummitCore stock list.
Cartons
Give internal dimensions in the order your team already uses, and say whether those dimensions are internal. Name the style, usually a regular slotted carton unless you need something else. Name the board strength in the figure your operation already buys — an ECT value or a burst value — rather than “heavy duty.”
Say if the carton is plain or printed. Printing has artwork, lead time, and a minimum that may not resemble a stock carton at all. If you are matching a carton already in use, a photo of the manufacturer’s stamp on the bottom is often more useful than a narrative description.
Tape
- Width, commonly a specific millimeter or inch width your dispensers already accept.
- Roll length.
- Adhesive family, if you have learned that one of them fails in your conditions.
- Hand dispenser or a case sealer. Those are not the same roll.
Stretch film
Hand film and machine film should never share a single line on a request. For hand film, gauge, width, and roll length are the core. For machine film, the machine’s specification matters more than a verbal description of “the wrap we use.” If you do not have the machine sheet, say so, and expect follow-up questions rather than a guess.
The sample items for hand stretch wrap and carton-sealing tape show this level of naming. They are illustrations. Do not send your customer to those pages to buy.
The operation around the product
- Rough throughput, as a range. Orders per day or cartons per shift is enough.
- How many pallet positions you can actually give the product.
- Whether a partial delivery is operationally useful.
- Any restriction on recycled content, print, or color that purchasing policy already imposes.
Storage is part of the requirement. A lower unit figure on a quantity you cannot house is not a saving. The bulk buying note covers that trade in more general terms. Operations buyers can also read warehousing and distribution for how we suggest framing the enquiry.
What this website will not do with packaging data
It will not connect to a warehouse system, calculate a gauge for you, or promise a film is in a nearby building. The packaging and warehouse category is the scope description. The quotation, if one can be written, is where a specific product is identified.
If a test is required — a board strength, a film gauge check, a tape trial — say who will judge it and on what basis. Do not assume a sample shipment is available.
